August 30, 2019: 16 UTC - Hurricane DORIAN strengthens in North Atlantic. Cyclone is expected to become an extremely dangerous major hurricane soon and could hit northern Bahamas and Florida likely as a category 4.
Hurricane DORIAN is strengthening on the last 6 hours. At 15 UTC, maximum wind sustained winds are near 95 kt (175 km/h) with gusts to 115 kt (200 km/h). Latest satellite date, show an eye in the heart of the core. A more favorable environnement should allow DORIAN to become a major Category 3 hurricane soon and a Category 4 in the next few days.
The track forecast not changed. At 15 UTC, DORIAN move Northwest at 9 kt. It should to turn west-northwestward and westward this weekend with a track to the northwestern Bahamas and the Florida peninsula. Life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are likely in portions of the northwestern Bahamas. NHC warn that the residents should execute their hurricane plan and listen to advice given by local emergency officials.
An extremely dangerous major hurricane soon
Life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are likely along portions of the Florida east coast by early next week according NHC. However, it is too soon to determine where the highest storm surge and winds will occur. It is also expected a prolonged period of storm surge, high winds and rainfall in portions of Florida into next week, including the possibility of hurricane-force winds over inland areas of the Florida peninsula.
And finally, heavy rains are expected over areas of the Bahamas, Florida, and elsewhere in the southeastern United States this weekend into the middle of next week. DORIAN could generate maximum wind sustained to 120 kt and gust to 145 kt in the next 72h. The cyclone is expected to become an extremely dangerous major hurricane soon with additional strengthening when it heads for the northwestern Bahamas and the Florida peninsula according to NHC.
